Title: Mission Team (2 of 4)
Series: Mission Possible
Author: Steve Jones
Scripture: Matthew 28:18-20
SERMON SUMMARY: 1) Focus 2) Culture, 3) Camaraderie 4) Diversity
INTRODUCTION: In this sermon series, Mission Possible, we're talking about the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:18-20 "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
1) "Make disciples of all nations" is the imperative (direct command). A "disciple" is a student and follower of a teacher or leader. In this case a follower of Jesus.
2) "Baptizing" and "Teaching" are instrumental participles. Participles modify the command to "Make disciples." They tell us "HOW it's done".
We are to make disciples of others by doing two things, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey all of Jesus' commands.
1) Saving the lost, and
2) Teaching the saved. And since we're talking about "All Nations" it's a BIG mission. We've entitled this sermon series "Mission Possible." WHAT makes this mission POSSIBLE? In this series, we're looking at four factors that make our mission possible. The factor we'll talked about last Sunday was "buy-in." Buy-in makes the mission possible. We must buy into the mission in the sense that we OWN it, believe in it, and are personally committed to it.
Today, I want to talk about the team. If you've ever seen a Mission Impossible movie you know that the character of Ethan Hunt never completes a mission alone. He always has a TEAM of field operatives and techno-geeks cooperating like the proverbial well-oiled machine. Having a team makes the mission possible. What that team is to Ethan Hunt, the church is to the Great Commission. The Church makes the mission possible in four ways.
