INTRODUCTION

A. Three times in the Scripture God called a man a fool.

1. MENTAL FOOL: Psalm 14:1 ''The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.''

ILLUSTRATION: Atheist was talking to a Chris- tian, He complained, ''You Christians have your holiday, but we atheists do not.'' ''Yes you do,'' replied the Christian, ''You have April Fools day.''

2. MORAL FOOL: Proverbs 14:16 ''A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool ranges and is self confident.''

It is foolish to think we can sin and get by.

3. MATERIALISTIC FOOL Luke 12.

B. Luke 12 teaches there is a time when success really becomes failure.

1. Some of Jesus' most powerful teaching came as a result of interruptions.

2. In Luke 12 Jesus was teaching the disciples to trust God for everything when a man interrupted with a request for Jesus to settle a family quarrel.

ILLUSTRATION: Apparently this was the younger brother who was upset with his older brother who would not give him the one-third of the estate that was rightfully his.

3. Can't help but feel sorry for the younger brother, not because he could not get his brother to settle up, but because of some real needs in his life.

a. He had deep spiritual needs.

b. He was speaking when he should have been listening.

c. His desire for material things was chocking the Works that Christ had for his life.

d. He was applying the word to others but not himself.

C. Jesus could have settled the family dispute with great wisdom and skill, but He refused to do so.

1. There are many people who want Jesus to solve their problems but not to change their hearts.

2. Jesus deals with causes not symptoms.

D. Jesus uses this time to teach a valuable lesson on success and failure.

1. There are many who think they are successful when, in reality, they are failing at the most important things in life.
