I Corinthians 13:7 "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
INTRODUCTION: I've performed countless wedding ceremonies in my days as a minister. Some of those marriages are decades old. Others, I'm sad to say, not so much. But all of marriages I helped to establish lasted longer than these:
1) Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas - 39 days.
2) Pamela Anderson and Jon Peters - 12 days.
3) Britney Spears and Jason Alexander - 55 hours.
4) I believe the shortest on record to be a couple in Kuwait who got divorced three minutes after they were married, according to Q8 news. They had not even left the courthouse where they exchanged the vows when the bride tripped over and fell. The groom, instead of helping her, called her "stupid." And so, the woman marched back to the judge who had just married them and demanded a divorce.
The longest marriage in modern history was between Karam and Kartari Chand, who were married for 86 years - from 1891 to 1978. The longest marriage in Biblical history is hard to pin down. Adam and Eve married soon after they were created, and Adam lived 930 years. We don't know when Eve passed. Presumably their marriage lasted several centuries.
We're in a sermon series entitled Family Matters / Love Matters. We're incorporating the Biblical descriptions of love from I Corinthians 13:4-7 into our families. We've seen that Biblical love is patient, kind, generous, true, and forgiving. Today let's notice how Biblical love is LASTING love and apply that to our families. We want our marriages, if we're married, and our families, no matter their configuration, to last; to go the distance; to endure.
