SERMON SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: On November 26, 2022, police in Oklahoma said they arrested a man after a family game of Monopoly turned violent. The Tulsa Police Department said John Armstrong was booked into the Tulsa County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon. Officers responded to a "shots fired" call on Saturday just before 6:30pm. The caller identified the suspect as Armstrong, adding that he chased her down and fired a shot at her and her father. Investigators said they learned the family had been drinking alcohol and playing Monopoly (bad combo) when a fight broke out between Armstrong and his stepfather. After knocking over the game board and turning over furniture, they were told to take the fight outside. Police said Armstrong pulled out a gun and chased his stepfather and stepsister down the street. (Go to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200). The moral of the story is clear, do NOT drink while playing Monopoly. That's a family that might need a little forgiveness.

I Corinthians 13:5 "Love keeps no record of being wronged."

Today we'll do a deep dive into Jesus' command to forgive those who sin against us. But before we talk about what forgiveness IS, let's talk about what forgiveness isn't.

1) Forgiving isn't folly. "Fooled me once shame on you. Fooled me twice shame on who? Me." (Gomer Pyle). Those who sin against us may be "repeat offenders." Forgiving them doesn't mean we let them take advantage of us again. You can forgive and still establish "boundaries" to protect yourself. If your brother-in-law tries to shoot you, forgive him. But axe the boardgames.

2) Forgiving isn't "shielding." You can forgive the person who shot at you while playing ...
