Title: Loving Truth (4 of 7)
Series: Family Matter / Love Matters
Author: Steve Jones
Text: I Corinthians 13
SERMON SUMMARY: We rejoice in the truth
1) Personally.
2) Collectively.
3) Parentally.
INTRODUCTION: Clark Ballard shared the following with me about his father, Claude Ballard, who grew up in Idaho. "Dad didn't influence people's lives by preaching to them but by living before them as an example that made an impact." Clark clearly remembers an incident when he was in high school, and he stopped by the post office to walk home with his dad, who was postmaster at the time. Instead of starting towards home Claude said he had to talk to Wes Jones down at the grocery store first. Wes had given him his bill for the month's groceries and even though Wes had totaled it, Dad had discovered that he owed $10 more than the amount indicated. Back in those days, that added almost 20% to the grocery bill for the month. They walked down to the store, Dad made the matter straight, and then they walked on home. Nothing was said, but the example of complete honesty even when it costs something was never forgotten.
I wanted to begin with that example today because it lends itself to our sermon series. Our sermon series is Family Matters / Love Matters. The way for our families to flourish is to incorporate Biblical love into their structure. We want families that are patient, generous and kind. But every family also needs a heaping helping of truth.
I Corinthians 13:6 "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth."
The contextual background to Paul's inclusion of evil and truth is the problem of immorality addressed in I Corinthians chapters 5-6. The Greek word used here for evil, adikia, is found in I Corinthians 6:9-10, where the apostle teaches that the unrighteous, (adikos), will not in inherit God's kingdom.
I Corinthians 6:9 "Don't you know that EVIL people won't have a share in the blessings of God's kingdom? Don't fool yours ...
