Title: Church Love (1 of 7)
Series: Family Matters / Love Matters
Author: Steve Jones
Text: I Corinthians 13
SERMON SUMMARY: The context of the "love chapter" of I Corinthians 13 is a CHURCH family in need of love. Church families, like biological families, discover three things about love.
1) Love endears.
2) Love accommodates.
3) Love matures.
INTRODUCTION: Bob Smiley wrote an article in which he suggests that churches would grow if they'd just market the nursery better. He says the church has what every parent is looking for, FREE CHILD CARE. Find a house with a bunch of kids, bang on the door, twenty minutes later, when the mom can finally GET to the door, simply say, "This Sunday for two hours someone ELSE will watch your children for free, what do you think about that?" You know the mom would shout, "Hallelujah, praise Jesus! If I get baptized, will you take them now?" So, enjoy the flower and the free childcare.
Mother's Day is a good day to begin our new sermon series, "Family Matters/LOVE Matters." That's because the central idea behind this sermon series is that LOVE is the key to successful family relationships.
Everyone has a "family." Whether that be the "traditional" family of husband, wife and 2.5 children. There are empty nesters. TINC's (two income no children). Singles have a family of origin. If you've outlived everyone then you have a church family, or CAN have one if you so choose.
If the word "love" seems a little nebulous right now, my hope is that this sermon series will help us see what love looks like in family life. Each week we're going to focus on one of the seven traits of a loving person using the description of love in I Corinthians 13:4-7 as our guide. The seven sermons are church, patience, kindness, truth, forgiveness, trust, and endurance.
I know what some of you are thinking. You're thinking, "I'm looking forward to this series because I KNOW someone who REALLY needs to hear thi ...
