Luke 15:11-22
INTRODUCTION
A. ''I forgive you are wonderful sounding words.''
1. They are rare in our day.
2. Often when used they are coupled with demands.
ill. When and if are two of the most pop- ular demands.
B. Yet, we have a God who says to us, I forgive you.
1. The Bible repeatedly points out the forgiving nature of God.
a. Jer. 31:34 ''...for I will for- give their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.''
b. Psalms 103:1-3 ''Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is with- in me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruc- tion, Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the Eagles.''
C. Understanding and accepting of God's forgiveness frees us to:
1. Be released from guilt.
2. To forgive ourselves.
3. To forgive others.
D. These truths are revealed in the story of the Prodigal Son.
I. GOD'S FORGIVENESS.
A. THE CONDITION THAT DEMANDS FORGIVENESS.
1. God's law is broken.
a. That is what sin is. It is breaking God's guidelines for living.
ill. God establishes parameters that are for our benefit.
b. We violate God's parameters and the outcome is dangerous, de- feating, and destructive.
c. The Prodigal Son is the classic illustration of this.
2. Sin alienates us from God.
3. Sin imprisons us in guilt.
ill. Sin always brings tragic results. David-Loss Joy. Samson-Loss power.
a. We replay our sins constantly.
b. We reconcile nothing can be done about it.
B. THE COMPASSION THAT PRECIPITATES FORGIVENESS.
1. The choice is God's to forgive.
2. Why did Jesus paint the Prodigal in such extreme terms? To show there was not one thing left in him to merit or motivate the father's f ...
