Title: Defensive and Offensive Sanctification
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12
Author: Brian Fletcher
Pre-Intro: We continue our sermon series entitled Holy Living with Future Hope. This morning we are going to get into some specifics about holy living. Specifically, we are going to talk about sanctification. As I read the passage, follow along and pay attention to how the author Paul describes sanctification.
READ PASSAGE: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12
INTRODUCTION:
On July 3, 1993, I stood next to wife Julie as she gave birth to our first child, Taylor. He came out a whopping 10lbs 15oz. If you've ever been in the room when a baby is born you know it's a little chaotic and extremely emotional. I'm crying, Julie feels relieved to get the baby out and someone hands me scissors to cut the umbilical cord. But I'm crying so hard I can't see. It was one of the three greatest moments of my life.
At that point, I became a parent. I had no training, I was not given any sort of license or certificate that said I was qualified to be a parent, I just was. One moment I wasn't, the next moment I was. And there were no take-backs. Now I had to start learning and growing as a parent.
I want to compare this illustration of being a parent and growing as a parent to the idea of sanctification.
Sanctification means the process of making and becoming set apart for God in order to worship Him. So sanctification has two parts:
1. Sanctification is who you are. You are a person made in the image of God and set apart to worship Him.
2. Sanctification is who you are becoming. While you are holy, you are also becoming more holy. It is a gradual purification from sin and progressive spiritual growth.
Now, let me be clear. It is God who sanctifies us. It is God alone who set us apart to be His beloved. We did nothing to merit this work of God upon us. However, once we are set apart God invites us to engage with His Holy Spirit to live a life, devoted to holy living ...
