Introduction
1. I Was Going to Begin This Message With a Question (A Simple Question, a Five Word Question) That You Would Think Invites Just a Simple Yes or No Answer. It Is a Question That Is Asked Year After Year in Gallup Polls, Harris Polls, Barna Group Polls, Surveys Such as the Baylor Religion Survey, the American Religious Identification Survey, the General Social Survey and Many others.1 the Question Is, “Do You Believe in God?”
2. Then I Came Across an Article Entitled, “When You Say You Believe in God, What Do You Mean?”2 the Pew Research Center Spent a Decade Conducting Its Own Religious Attitude Survey Both in the United States and Abroad and Concluded That There Needs to Be a Brand-New Approach to This Age Old and Now Maybe Not So Simple Question of God belief.3
3. What They Found Was Eye Opening. Now the Good News Is Eighty-Percent of Americans Said They Believe in God. The Bad News Is Only Fifty-Six Percent Believe in God as Described in the Bible and One-Third of Americans Believe in a “Higher Power or Spiritual Force” of Some Kind, but Not in the Biblical god.4
4. Well, I Do Believe in the Biblical God and I Unashamedly Say I Believe He Is the Only God Worth Believing In, but There Is a Message Here Even for the Traditional Church. Though the Vast Majority of Us Would Say We Believe In God, I Wonder Do We Really Believe In What I Call the “Can-Do God?” I Freely Confess Sometimes the God I Say I Believe In Unfortunately Is a Lot Smaller Than the God of the Bible and I Am Going to Make What May Be a Controversial Statement. I Am About Convinced That God Would Prefer We Not Even Believe In Him at All Than to Believe He Is Anything Less Than the Can-Do God.
