Introduction

1. Today, I Am Going to Talk About a Topic That in All the Years Growing Up in Church I Never Heard Addressed One Time, Not Just in a Sermon, but Not Even in a Sentence. I Never Heard It Mentioned. Frankly, I Somewhat Understand Why, Because of All the Things That One Could Preach on Today, I Am Pretty Sure This Topic Is Not One That Will Get People Leaping Out of Their Seats in Excitement. I Believe I Might Get One Halleluiah or Praise God in the Most Charismatic Pentecostal Church in America. In Fact, I Am Hoping a Lot of You Just Don’t Pull Out Your Phones and Start Playing Sudoku.

2. Yet, Strangely Enough When You See How Often It Is Mentioned in Scripture. It Is Very Important to God and It Should Be More Important to Us. To Give You One Example, One Thing That We Emphasize in Our Church Is Baptism. We Believe Baptism Is Very Important to the Christian Life. It Is Not Important to Becoming a Christian, but It Is Important to Being One. It Is the Way You Profess Your Faith in Jesus Christ Publicly and Openly. No Matter How You View Baptism, Most Christians in Most Churches Would Not Deny That Baptism Is a Very Important Part of Christianity, but Here Is a Shocking Statistic I Didn’t Know. Baptism Is Referred to Seventy-Five Times in the Bible, but the Topic I Am Addressing Today “Fasting” Is Referred to Seventy-Seven times.1

3. Fasting Is Something We Honestly Know Very Little About and We Don’t Practice It Very Much. We Know a Lot About Feasting, but We Don’t Know a Lot About Fasting. I Get It. On Any Given Day, I Would Chose a Feast Over a Fast Anytime. Yet, if We Want to Be on the Right Side of History We Need to Learn About Fasting and We Need to Understand Why It Is a Discipline We Should Experience.
