INTRODUCTION:
[ILLUSTRATION]> A few years ago they were planning to build a hydroelectric plant near a small town in Maine. They were going to dam up the river and the little town would be submerged and it would cease to exist.
The little town of people was given many months to prepare to get their lives in order and to relocate. It became apparent that over the next several months things in the town began to change.
When the news was given to these families, knowing that they were going to lose their town and their homes---all improvements in the community ceased. Houses were left unpainted; no one mowed their lawns; buildings were no longer touched and repaired. Activities were canceled and never rescheduled.
Even though the people were not going to leave the town or their homes for several months down the road, when someone entered the little town, it looked as if it had been abandoned.
One of the citizens of this little town told someone passing through..."When there is no faith in the future, there is no power in the present." You could say that this little town was cursed with hopelessness.
Here in [John 14] these disciples were feeling "hopeless". Their hearts were troubled; they were shaken; stressed. Their courage was fading...Jesus is giving them a heads-up that He is going to leave them. The disciples had left everything just to follow Jesus; and now He's not going to be with them very much longer.
Jesus had told them earlier that one of them would betray Him. The disciples didn't know who Jesus was referring to because when He told them this, they said; "Lord, is it I?" Jesus also said that Simon Peter was doing to deny Him. This had to be troubling for them because Simon Peter was a strong, boisterous man.
