Title: Spiritual Gifts and Harmony in the Church
Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13
Author: Marvin Patterson
A woman got on a bus holding a baby. The bus driver said: "That's the ugliest
baby I've ever seen." In a huff, the woman slammed her fare into the fare box
and took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus.
The man seated next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her
what was wrong.
"The bus driver insulted me," she fumed.
The man sympathized and said: "Why, he's a public servant and shouldn't
say things to insult passengers."
"You're right," she said. "I think I'll go back up there and give him a piece of
my mind."
"That's a good idea," the man said. "Here, let me hold your monkey."
In 1 Cor. 12-14 Paul deals with the subject of spiritual gifts against the background of
divisions and moral laxity in a church that lacked no gift (•1 Cor. 1:7, see note). 1 Cor.
12:12 deals with the unity and diversity of the gifts, 1 Cor. 13 with the power of love, and
1 Cor. 14 with the specific gifts of prophecy and tongues.-Ryrie Study Notes

Paul changes the subject from the worship service to spiritual gifts. We all have spiritual
gifts which enable us to serve the Lord in a particular way! Listen to Romans 11:29,
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
God imparts to us a spiritual gift to edify the church, and bring Him glory, and he does
not change His mind when HE does so.
1 Peter 4:10
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good
stewards of the manifold grace of God.
So it is our responsibility to find the will of God and do the will of God through the gifts
and callings of God. Paul does not want them ignorant but smart concerning these
spiritual gifts.
