Jesus was concerned about His followers. He was the GREAT SHEPHERD. Because He cared so much, He went to extra lengths to introduce them to the person of the HOLY SPIRIT. How do I know this? Because some of His last words were (John 16) "I'm going away because if I don't go away the Counselor (the Holy Spirit) will not come. If I go, I will send Him to you, and He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment." Next, He explains about the need and task of the Spirit. He says, "When the Spirit of Truth (Holy Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears." (Pause, The Spirit speaks what the Father speaks.) He will glorify me." Jesus promoted the Holy Spirt (visa-versa)

Before we pasteurized and homogenized this thing we call Christianity, Christ followers consistently and earnestly taught and sought to be filled with the Spirit because they knew they could not live the Christ-life without being divinely empowered by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit of God. To be clear, I don't believe us Baptists have the correct view of the Holy Spirit (because we have too many cessationists (or practical cessationists)) in our midst. A cessationists is one who believes the spiritual gifts referred to a 'sign gifts' have ceased. Candidly, I have many friend who believe this way. I don't believe this is correct. Why? Because the very gifts have only ceased in the prosperous land called "America" while on the mission fields, in the impoverished lands where all they have is their dependence on God, those same gifts are being manifest in a consistent way. One of my close preacher friends and I were discussing this, and his rationale was "We don't see prophecy, healings, and more displayed today."
