Today we conclude a short series on some of the most surprising things Jesus said. Often these surprise sayings are called Jesus' "Hard Sayings of Jesus." Jesus will surprise you. In fact, He will shock you. Again, Jesus will shock you. Jesus said a lot of things that caused people to reject Him and ultimately crucify Him. Jesus caused division. Jesus' words have always caused division from His day all the way to our day.
Find Matthew 11 with me if you will.
When you move slowly through all four gospels, you can count more than forty one on one conversations Jesus has with various people. Jesus speaks to men, women, white collar, blue collar, and no collar. Jesus speaks to all kinds of people, and we have numerous conversations recorded to study.
Again, Jesus said some curious things that many call the "Hard Sayings." When the Twelve Disciples heard Jesus teach something really challenging, the Disciples said in response, "This is a hard saying. Who can follow this? Who can listen to this?"
Now, there was another prophet in Jesus' days, John the Baptist. He was actually a cousin or either a second cousin to Jesus. Jesus calls him the greatest of all the Hebrew prophets. Jesus calls him the greatest of all the Old Testament prophets. Because he baptized so many people and his message focused on baptism, they called him John the Baptizer or John the Baptist. John is thrown in prison for saying something true about the local political ruler, Herod Antipas. When the subject of John comes up, Jesus seizes the moment to talk about how great his cousin is. And in the middle of discussing John the Baptist, Jesus says one of the most head-scratching statements recorded. See if you can identify it.
