Title: The Coming of The Holy Spirit
Series: The Acts of the Holy Spirit (5)
Author: Collin Wimberly
Text: Acts 2:1-13
CIT: The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost
PROPOSITION: Believers today must understand and experience the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives and in the church.
INTRODUCTION:
It is the day of Pentecost - One of the five major feasts of Israel. This particular feast was celebrated 50 days after Passover. This as a time of thanksgiving, a time of solemn assembly for Israel. Over time it had become a celebration of the giving of the law. It was the most popular of the pilgrimage feasts. Jerusalem would have been filled with Jews from every corner of the known world. Almost 100,000 people would have been in the city.
Our attention is drawn not to the large crowd gathering at the temple, but to a relatively small group, 120, to be exact. For the past 10 days they have been gathering the upper room of a house meeting and praying.
The apostles were there. Matthias, Judas's replacement is there. Along with them we find a handful of the thousands who had at one time thronged to hear Jesus preach.
For 10 days they had been meeting. Jesus had told, just before he ascended to heaven, that they were to wait and to watch and to pray for the coming of the helper. I don't know if they expected anything to happen on this particular day. I doubt it.
Suddenly - it happens. - a sound like a blowing blast of wind- a roar like a hurricane or the scream of a tornado- filled the house.
Tongues of fire appeared. They were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they did not
know and they preached the Mighty acts of God! Peter will preach and 3,000 people will be saved. Miracles
will occur. Churches will be planted. The mighty Roman Empire will be shaken to its very foundations by what
happens to a 120 people in the upper room of this house! This was a Supernatural occurrence!
