Title: The Sin I Struggle with the Most... (Failure to Rest)
Scripture: Exodus 20:8-11
Author: Jordan Easley
A few years ago, as I was watching the Olympics, a Cadillac commercial caught my attention... In the opening frame, there was a man in the backyard of his mansion, standing by his swimming pool... and as he stood there, with a smug demeanor on his face, he said, "Why do we work so hard?" Then he said, "For this? For stuff?"
He said, (And I quote) "Other countries, they work. They slowly stroll home. They stop by the cafÈ. They take August off... Why aren't we like that? (...and then he answered himself and said...) Because we're crazy, driven, hard-working believers, that's why." He went on to say... "The stuff... that's the upside to all the work... and we have it because we only take one week off in August."
In 60 seconds of advertising... I believe Cadillac perfectly portrayed the pursuit and mindset of most Americans... We work. We hustle. We accumulate as much as we can, and we don't slow down... why? ...because the second you slow down... is the moment you get left behind and become irrelevant.
A few weeks after this commercial aired, Huffington Post published an article that said, "Cadillac made a commercial about the American dream... and the American Dream is a nightmare."
We live in a world where the norm is... GO! GO! GO! In fact, we pride ourselves in burning the candle at both ends. If you don't believe me... just go around asking people, "How's everything going in your world these days?" You know what you'll hear? "It's good... but it's been busy. We're working hard these days." When you ask somebody, "How are you feeling?" You know what you'll hear? They'll say... "I'm good, but I'm tired. Life is pretty crazy right now."
Those are normal responses in our day-to-day life. We work hard! ...and it's because we feel validated when we produce... and we know how to work. But the question is: Do we know the purpos ...
