2 Thessalonians 2
Brian Fletcher
2 Thessalonians 2
Context:
Let’s think big picture about what was going on in the New Testament.
Jesus comes on the scene, proclaiming He is the Son of God, the Messiah that
was prophesied about in the OT.
Jesus proves His divinity through miracles and his teachings
Jesus dies on the cross and is raised from the dead then ascends into heaven,
telling his disciples to spread this gospel of good news to the rest of the world.
After Jesus ascended to heaven, the Holy Spirit is unleashed on all believers and
they begin to spread the gospel throughout the known world. The book of Acts
tells us this story and recounts the missionary journeys of the apostles as well as
a new convert, the apostle Paul.
As they travel abroad proclaiming the gospel, they plant churches along the way,
communities of believers who were to love God and love their neighbors with the
gospel, thus fulfilling the great commission.
The apostle Paul would plant a church and then move on to the next city. In order
to follow up with the churches and the pastors and elders, he would write letters
to them. These letters were to encourage, equip, train, and help organize the
churches. Sometimes admonishing and offering resolution to disputes that were
happening in the churches.
Here are some questions we need to ask about this letter and specifically this
passage:
-What does this letter reveal about God?
-What does this letter reveal about the people in the church of
Thessalonica? Their struggles, joys, failures, faults, their hopes or
confusion. What were they dealing with?
-How is the gospel presented in this passage to help them understand their
situation, live in the midst of it, and glorify God through it? Or to put it
another way, how does the gospel redeem this situation or circumstance?
-Finally, how do the answers to these questions help us apply this gospel
to our lives and our situations today?
