CIT - Jesus ascends into heaven.
Proposition - Christians today need to understand the implications of Jesus' ascension into heaven.
INTRODUCTION:
The ascension is a neglected aspect of the ministry of Jesus Christ. However, there is much truth, much help and much comfort that can be found in this doctrine.
1) It was foretold in the OT -(Psalm 68:18, NKJV) "You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men, Even from the rebellious, That the Lord God might dwell there. "
2) It was promised by Jesus - During his ministry Jesus was headed to the cross, but homesick for heaven. Often he spoke of he and his Father being one and of his returning to his father. "What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?" (John 6:62, NKJV)
During his ministry Jesus gave a few of disciples a sneek peek of what the ascension would be like at the transfiguration. Mark 9 -
3) It was Witnessed by His Disciples - Acts 1:9 - While they watched. Jesus was taken up, the law of gravity was suspended by the Lord! Up he goes, surrounded by a cloud. I believe this to be the shekienh cloud of God's glory. He ascended out of their sight! Talk about a memory!
4) What does it mean? The ascension of Jesus to heaven is filled with truth that impacts my life right here and right now! In fact, it is certainly one of the most important truths you can ever discover!
I) HE FINALIZED OUR REDEMPTION - "The ascension is viewed in some respects as the completion of the atoning work of Jesus Christ." Evangelical Dict. Of Biblical theology.
