CIT - Jesus commissions the apostles with the ministry he has for them to do after his ascension.
Proposition - Jesus commissions the Church today with purpose and power for the work he has for them.

INTRODUCTION

The author is Luke. Vs. 1 - the former account is the Gospel of Luke.

Luke 1:1 was written as a narrative of the things fulfilled in Christ. Acts is the continuation of that, volume 2 if you will.

However, Acts is an unfinished work in one sense. Not the revelation of God in Scripture is incomplete. It is not. The Word is complete and sufficient.

You, I, and New Life Church are a continuation of the acts of the Holy Spirit.
Acts gives us snapshots of the life of the early church. If I put a snapshot of myself up at 5 years old, then 16, then 25, 30, 40 and finally today at 56, you would notice some differences. They would be pictures of my life as I grew and matured. That is what Acts is. A series of true stories, snapshots of the life of the Church as it grew and spread.

The key phrase of this book is "filled with the Holy Spirit." Acts is a chronicle of the Church on fire, the church consumed by and carried away the Holy Spirit.

Theophilus - name means a friend of God.

I) HE WAS PREPARING HIS DISCIPLES -
These first 3 verses describe the apostles's preparation. The Lord was equipping them for their ministry.

These men were not formally trained, many of them probably had only a rudimentary education. They were not highly talented. Yet, they were used by God to change the world!

For three years of His earthly ministry and for 40 days after his resurrection Jesus prepared these men for what lay ahead of them.
