Title: Taking Motherhood Back (Mother's Day 2023)
Scripture: Proverbs 31
Author: Robert Dawson
A few years ago, a clip made the rounds of a mother fighting to regain influence in her children's lives, influence she felt had been replaced by social media. Every parent here knows the adverse social and developmental impact that electronics, such as phones and computers, can have on all of us, especially our young people.
To combat that, and usually as a form of punishment, parents take away the devices for a time, or completely. The mom in this video took it to a completely different level. Fed up with her children's disrespect and disobedience, the clip begins by showing this shotgun wielding momma proclaiming, "I hereby denounce the effects that social media has on my children...and I take back my role as parent to my children." As she shouts these words, her children, who have not arisen to call her blessed, look on, cursing and giving mom the old you're number one sign. After a moment, she lifts the gun, aims it at their smartphones stacked on a piece of firewood, and unloads. Then, she does it again. After shooting them a second time, she smashes the remaining pieces with a sledgehammer while shouting, "My children's lives are more important to me than any electronic on earth."
Full disclosure, I do find it rather ironic that she used her electronic phone and social media to promote this...can anyone say "likes" and suffering from the same disease but, I love the statement, "I'm taking back my role as parent to my children."
When it comes to Mother's Day sermons, I always feel the need to defend and, in some ways, try and claw back some of the ground society has worked so hard for decades to destroy, the honor, glory, and high calling of what it means to be a wife and mother.
-Sadly, we have moved beyond having to defend the beauty of a woman as wife and mother, which we do without apologies, to defending and defining what a woman is in genera ...
