My family is very musical. My wife and three kids all sing and play instruments. I'm the only weak link. But I'm actually a former musician and vocalist. When I was a young boy, I experimented with the trumpet and drums. In middle school, I dabbled with the guitar. I even sang in a choir and did an epic duet to a Chicago song. I absolutely love music! My problem has always been that I've lacked the commitment to stick with an instrument and take voice lessons.

Instead, my passion was directed toward sports. Once I got into high school, I lifted weights and practiced basketball several hours a day. I wanted to play college hoops. Now, which do you think I wish I had pursued? Music, of course! I know this physical body looks like it could perform astonishing feats during March Madness, but its breaking down before your very eyes. Yet, if I had maintained my commitment to music, I could be playing an instrument and singing well for the rest of my life. I could've been Carlos Santana, making music until I'm seventy-five. I wish I'd been more committed to stick with music.

Commitment is both elusive and costly. It's elusive in the sense that we don't want to obligate ourselves to people or responsibilities. It's costly because we may have to sacrifice our own happiness. God may be calling you to remain resolute in your singleness or marriage. He may be asking for you to modify your work-life balance. He may be prompting you to give more of your earthly resources. The question that we'll be wrestling with is this: What specific area of our lives is God calling us to further commit to Him? We'll find the answer to this question in Nehemiah 10. In these forty verses, Nehemiah records two responses from God's people.
