Introduction

I've been involved in church my entire life, been a pastor for many years. Served and loved God. Served and loved His church. Then why did God allow me to have five strokes in April of 2016, the effects of which I still deal with today? My father-in-law grew up in an abusive, alcoholic household. He not only managed to survive, but got himself, his mother, and six siblings out to safety, became a devoted follower of Jesus, a good and faithful husband and father, would do anything for you. Why did God allow him to get Parkinson's Disease? My brother-in law, my sister's husband, a Henrico County police officer in Richmond, father of an eleven and eight-year-old, married to a schoolteacher, diagnosed with brain cancer just over a year ago, spent a year in chemo and radiation after numerous brain surgeries and yet this most recent scan showed two new spots have appeared on his brain. Why God, why? What about all the stories and questions you could add to this list, questions you did indeed add in preparation for this series?

This morning we ask, "Why does God allow bad things to happen?". It's a question that has plagued humanity, produced volumes and volumes of books. Scholars and philosophers have debated this question, offered various explanations. In universities, graduate schools, classes and seminars are offered on this so-called Problem of Evil. In academia we call it theodicy, but none of that matters because to all of us this morning we call it life.

What I'll try to do with our brief time this morning is illuminate what the Bible says in regards to pain and suffering. Just to be upfront here at the outset I will not and cannot answer each and every particular situation.
