If you knew you were going to die and had the opportunity to sum up everything that was most important to you, what would say? What would you share with those who were with you? Do you think you would see things differently, more clearly, in the light of death?

As we near the end of Genesis, we come to the last moments of Jacob's whirlwind of a life, a life that spanned 147 years, the last 17 of which were spent in Egypt. When Jacob was sick and death was approaching, they sent for Joseph and told him that his father was ill. Joseph, along with his two sons, Ephraim, and Manasseh, went to see him.

When Jacob, was told that Joseph had come, he gathers what is left of his strength, sits up in bed and speaks to Joseph and his two sons, after which, he will speak to all of his sons and share prophetic words of blessing, correction and warning.

For our purposes today, I want us to consider this final interaction between Joseph and his father. As Jacob sits up in his bed, he says...

Genesis 48.3-21 - "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, 'Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.' 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."
