Title: The Watchman on the Wall
Series: Standing in the Gap (4 of 7)
Primary Scripture: Exodus 33:1-11
Author: Jeff Schreve
About a hundred years ago, people living in homes or in apartments had a ten percent chance of dying if they had a fire in their dwelling, just about a hundred years ago. Ten percent would die about a hundred years ago. Today, that has gone down to one percent. One percent of people who have a fire in their home, in their dwelling, will die, on average. And it has totally changed, from ten percent to one percent, all because of a little device that was made popular about sixty years ago called the smoke alarm. We have a picture. How many of you have one of those in your home? If you don't have one, I would encourage you to get it. You can get one for about fifteen dollars. That little dude will be on call 24/7 to watch out for smoke, because where's smoke there is fire. And this alarm (noise), yes, that is the noise that you hear when there is a fire, and it lets you know. It doesn't care what you might have going on. You know, maybe you have a wedding going on at your house. If it senses smoke, it's going to let you know, hey, there's smoke! And where there is smoke there is fire. And those things have saved many lives. They exist to give us a warning to save our lives.
Now, we're in a series called, "Standing in the Gap." And we are talking about how God wants to use us as individuals and as a church to stand in the gap. Ezekiel 22, verse 30, God says, "I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap for the land, that I would not destroy it, and I found no one." God is looking for His children to stand in the gap, and to pray, and to stand on the wall, and to speak the truth in love, and to warn the people of coming judgment.
Now, in ancient times, the cities all had walls around them. And if you didn't have a wall around your city, you couldn't really have a city because the p ...
