Title: Between the Dead and the Living
Series: Standing in the Gap (2 of 7)
Primary Scripture: Numbers 16:41-50
Author: Jeff Schreve
Some of you know the name E.M. Bounds. He was a pastor. He was an author. He was an attorney. He lived 1835 to 1913. E.M. Bounds wrote eleven books and nine of them focused on the subject of prayer. Many people will say, 'If you want to read a good book on prayer, read E.M. Bounds' book on prayer." You say, "Which one?" Choose any of the nine. But he said this, a very famous quote: "What the church needs today is not more or better machinery, not new organizations or more novel methods, but men whom the Holy Spirit can use, men of prayer, men mighty in prayer." So, I want to ask you a question. He was using men in the generic sense. God is looking for men, women, boys, girls who are people of prayer, mighty in prayer. Would you say that you're a person of prayer? Would you say that you are a person who is mighty in prayer? Many of us wouldn't say that. We would say, "You know, when it comes to prayer, I'm not very good at prayer. I come to prayer meeting, perhaps, but I never voice anything out loud because I just don't feel confident in my praying." And many of us, we go to pray, and maybe we pray at night, and we fall asleep praying. We get on our knees and we pray, and we think, well, I'm going to pray for a long time. And we shoot all our prayer bullets, and we look at the clock, and two minutes have passed. And we just think, man, I must not be very mighty in prayer. And God is looking for people who are mighty in prayer, so I guess God isn't looking for me, because I'm not very mighty in prayer. Here's the good news: God can enable you and can enable me to be people of prayer, people who are mighty in prayer. Jesus said, "My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves." And we need to learn how to pray.
