A Law That Should Never Be Broker

INTRODUCTION

1. I think of the date, October 7, 1969. That date commemorated the day that the Montreal police force went on strike. Because of what resulted, the day has been referred to as Black Tuesday. In the day's tragic events, many despicable things took place.

2. For example, a burglar and a policeman were killed. Forty- nine persons were wounded or killed in rioting; and, 9 bank holdups were committed, 17 of them at gunpoint.

3. Usually peaceful citizens joined in the rioting, and smashed over 1000 plate glass windows in a stretch of 21 business blocks, hauling away stereos, TV's, and clothing. Citizen involvement made it easy on professional burglars, and they got away with truckloads of goods.

4. A television news team summed up this awful day in history, by showing a well-dressed businessman scampering down a street with a fur coat under each arm, with no police around.

5. Statistics tell us that if crime were tied to a clock, these offenses would occur at the following intervals:

? 1 murder is committed every 22 minutes? A rape occurs every 5 minutes? A robbery occurs every 47 seconds? An assault is committed every 28 seconds? A burglary occurs every 11 seconds. 1

6. I thank God for the laws of our land that are place, and stand to protect us. Yet, in spite of the fact, those laws are still broken every second of every day.

7. As we come to our text, our Lord outlines a principle, a precept, and a policy that should never be broken by us as believers. It is the law of Love, and it serves as the final authority for our lives.

8. W. Graham Scroggie said of love, "Language without love is noise without melody; it is the clang of a gong, and not the music of an organ. Chatter is of no use without charity, nor is sound without soul. Language may arrest the attention, but only love can satisfy the heart!" 2
