James 3:13-16

Alexander Haley grew up in Tennessee where his grandmother told him about their family history which had been passed down from one generation to the next through stories. He became a writer after he left the service and he spent 10 years researching
his family history through stories, museums, and trips to Africa.
The result of all his diligent research was the book he wrote titled, ROOTS: The Saga of an American Family, published in 1976 which won a special Pulitzer Prize a year later.

A television miniseries based on the book attracted over 130 million viewers who saw 16-year-old Kunta Kinte abducted while hunting in West Africa in 1767 and taken to Maryland where he was sold as a slave. The moving and touching story grabs you because it is his personal struggle for freedom which we all desire.
He died in Seattle, WA on February 10, 1992.

Alex Haley had a unique picture hanging on the wall in his office. It was a turtle sitting on top of a fence post. He loved it because it was a constant reminder. He said, "If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he had some help. Any time I start thinking, 'Wow, isn't this marvelous what I've done!' I look at that picture
and remember how this turtle, me, got up on that post."
