If you have your Bible, please turn to Luke, chapter 15. For several weeks we have been in a series called Sticking Points: Overcoming Obstacles to Faith. We started this series by talking about unbelief. You know, unbelief is a big sticking point that people have. And we used as our illustration of unbelief from Hebrews, chapter 3, the children of Israel when they got right to the borderline of the Promised Land, but they didn't go in. And the reason they didn't go in was because of unbelief. God said, "How long will these people not believe Me, in spite of all the signs I've done in their midst?" And unbelief is a big sticking point.

Then, we also talked about trials and tragedies, and we used the life of Job. And that becomes a sticking point for people when bad things happen and come in like a hurricane into their lives, it can cause them to get bitter at God and not move on with the Lord.

Last week, we talked about the prodigal son. He's the posterchild for guilt and shame. He's the one that left the father and wasted all his father's, inheritance money and ended up at the pig sty, filled with guilt and shame over the things that he had done.


And today, we want to talk about something that seems strange, and that is the sticking point of religion. You know, when we say that, many people think, well, wait a minute! Isn't religion kind of faith? Isn't that all kind of mixed together? So, how could that be something that would be a sticking point to moving on with God? Well, when religion is self-focused and self-centered and self-righteous, and when it's keeping a bunch of rules and going through rituals and having a religious regiment that you do every single day or every single week, that can keep you from a true relationship with God.
