Recently, I began a sermon series called, Foundations: what every Christian ought to know. Over the next several weeks, we will spend a good bit of time talking about the fundamentals and essentials of our faith. My prayer is that this will be a very practical series that will provide a firm foundation for your faith.
Two weeks ago, we began with a foundational truth: The Bible Is the Word of God. Today, I want you to find 1 John 5 in your Bible. And I'm preaching on this subject, How To Be Saved and Know It. Today, from God's Word, I want to show you how you can be absolutely certain of your salvation. And we're going to focus on one verse in 1 John; that's verse 13. We'll look at supporting evidence throughout the book of 1 John but our focus will be 1 John 5:13. READ TEXT
*If you have spent any time in the church, it's possible you've heard some phrases like this: "When it comes to your salvation, to be 99% sure is to be 100% lost." Or maybe, "True believers will never really doubt their faith." Have you heard someone say something like that? Or, "If you have any doubts at all, you need to nail it down right here and right now." There's just one problem with that kind of thinking. You won't find it in the Bible. In fact, 1 John was written to Christians who were struggling to determine if their salvation was genuine. John wrote this letter to provide a way to determine if your faith is fake or genuine. I can remember struggling with assurance of salvation when I was younger. I just wanted to make sure I had it right and I struggled to know for certain if I was saved. One night I heard a sermon and the pastor said, "Imagine your heart is like a home.
