Ephesians 5:15-21
This morning, we continue our study called, Foundations: what every Christian ought to know. We have talked about how to know you're saved, how to trust and obey the Bible, how to walk by faith, and so much more. Today, I want you to find Ephesians 5:15-18 in your Bible and I want to talk to you about How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit.
*Many of us think that the Holy Spirit is like our pituitary gland. You know it's there, you're glad you've got it, and you don't want to lose it, but you're not exactly sure what it does. Well, the Holy Spirit does a lot. He is our teacher, reminder, and enabler.*1
*In fact, it is impossible to understand the Bible, Christian living, the structure of the church, or our own relationship with God without understanding the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an "it." The Holy Spirit is a person. He is not something. He is Someone. He is God. There are three persons in the Trinity-God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The moment we receive Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live in our hearts. There is not a person anywhere who can be a Christian or follow the commands of Christ without the Holy Spirit.*2 READ TEXT
*Imagine a man who just purchased a brand-new car. He's never even driven a vehicle before and never owned a car before. He is proud so proud of his car and invites all of his friends over to show it off. He shows them the beautiful paint job, the nice leather seats, all of the safety features...he loves his new car. While he's proud of his automobile and in some ways grateful that he has it, in other ways he secretly wishes he didn't have it. Because instead of driving his car around town, he's been pushing it everywhere he wants to go. Then, someone says, "I want to show you something. This is a key and here's the ignition."
