Series: Mark

Mark 14:1-72
Introduction
32 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 He said to them, "I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake." 35 He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, "Abba, Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will," (Mark 14:32-36).
I've been very blessed to have grown up in the church. Thanks to my parents, I can't recall a time when I didn't know the name, Jesus. I don't remember ever not knowing that Jesus died for my sins. Before I learned much, before I could read, I knew by heart one of the most profound truths in existence,
Jesus loves me,
This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me. Wow.
But that love brought a cost; it demonstrated itself in sacrifice, in loss. I've always struggled to really understand the scene I just read, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane the night of his arrest, the eve of his death. Why was Jesus so grieved? Wasn't this the very thing he had come to do? Deeply distressed and troubled; was he just scared of the pain to come? "Take this cup away from me." Is he doubting? Is he asking to not go through with it?
I ask these questions because I have yet to fully grasp what the cross meant to Jesus. I've yet to fully grasp his love. I don't think I ever will because it far exceeds anything I'll ever be able to grasp.
But this is precisely what Mark intends for us to see in chapter 14 this morning. You might say, then, that this morning's message is part 1 with our upcoming Good Friday message being part 2, but of which together helping us to think m ...
