Morning church. Today we begin our 14-week study through the book of Nehemiah. So please turn with me to Nehemiah 1.
One of our core convictions at The Stone is that we are ruled by God's Word. This means that we believe that the Scripture are true, and that we hold them high as right and authoritative, and we submit ourselves to them. So that is why we would spend 14 weeks studying a story from two thousand five hundred years ago. I am excited for what we might learn together.

I love that one of the main ways that God reveals who He is and how He works with a group of people is through the recording of story. He could have simply issued decrees and written them in the sky for us to observe every morning. "Oh yeah, remember what God is like." But instead, He got involved in the stories of a people, people like us, with complex narratives, and many distractions and important contexts of culture, time, space ... lived history. I love it because it is so kind because this is how we live and experience life, as ongoing story, and not just as abstract principles.
So it is important for us, as we jump into a true, recorded story of God's work amongst a people that we take the time to remember that this story exists as part of a bigger story, and we do that by looking back and forward from it, connecting it to a timeline in which we still live. A timeline of God's work in the world.
As I reminded myself of the story of God's redemption which provided the context for Nehemiah this week, I thought about one of my favorite films ever made. It's called Memento and it was very important in putting Christopher Nolan on the map as a director. Now don't judge my choice, it was 2000, and I had frosted tips an ...
