Intro:
Back to Life of David for the last couple of installments. Where he left him, he was at his peak, ruling as what looked like a genuinely benevolent king, showing hesed even to the sons of his enemies.

But, the bible is a brutally and wonderfully honest book. It doesn’t leave us there, wondering how on
earth we could be more like David. It tells the truth of its characters, and gives us actual people who are like us and who are beloved by God.

Here is the danger for us then with this text. We can’t help but center ourselves in narratives. We too
closely align ourselves with David when he is doing well and we will be tempted to too quickly distance
ourselves from David when he does really badly.

David’s life isn’t recorded as some kind of blueprint for human behavior to either follow or avoid.
Rather it is recorded as an imprint of a deeply human life to learn from in humility.

What an unbelievable thing it is to be a human being beloved by God.

So humbly ask the Lord. What can I learn from this? Where am I in danger of destructive sin? What can I
see of God’s grace and work in this story and in my life? How can I respond?

Will read a lot of text and offer some context and then make three observations. 2 Samuel 11.


Text and Main Points:

11:1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at
Jerusalem.

Here we see the early signs of David going with a very typical human thought pattern.
Success brings separation.

You earn the right to separate yourself from the things and people you have been called to lead and
serve, and you justify it with your own unique experiences.
