YOUR SPIRITUAL ADDRESS
Jerry N Watts
Ephesians 2:11-22
Many people in our congregation have lived at a single address most of their lives. Not so for us. As we have moved in the ministry, we have had over 30 personal addresses. Your physical address is the center of your life, it the hub of where you stay and what you do. That's your physical address. For us, we remember those addresses with fondness, joy, sadness, and even struggles. There is a range of emotion and memories, all of which are the things that make us who we are.
The older I get and the more I read God's word, the more personal it seems to be. Having read Ephesians many times, it occurs to me that, in this passage, Paul is pointing out our spiritual addresses. In particular, he is trying to remind the Ephesians (and us) of our Spiritual journey and the spiritual locations in which we have resided. I'm reminded of the Late George Younce, bass singer for the "Cathedral Quartet" singing, "Thanks to Calvary." Here's the lyrics Gloria wrote:
Today I went back to the place where I used to go.
Today I saw the same old crowd I knew before.
When they asked me what had happened,
I tried to tell them, "Thanks to Calvary,
I don't come here anymore."
Thanks to Calvary, I am not the man that I used to be
Thanks to Calvary, things are different than before.
While the tears ran down my face, I tried to tell them,
"Thanks to Calvary, we don't come here anymore."
Then we went back to the house where we used to live.
My little boy ran and hid behind the door.
And I said: "Son, oh little boy, don't be afraid,
Because you've got a brand-new daddy now."
Thanks to Calvary, we don't live there anymore.
Thanks to Calvary, I am not the dad that I used to be
Thanks to Calvary, things are different than before.
While the tears ran down my face, I tried to tell my little boy,
"Thanks to Calvary, we don't live here anymore."
