Seven Bible Valleys
Dr David Davis
Psalm 23:4
I wrote a book entitled "Psalms 23 - The Lord is My Shepherd... He's all I Want" and I gave a copy to an older friend of mine who was retired but worked part-time at my bank.
Several months passed by before I saw him again and he told me he had been in the hospital for a procedure, and he took my book with him to read while in the hospital room.
He shared the room with a man who was terminal and had only weeks remaining to live.
One day my friend took my book out to read and the man in the other bed asked what he was reading. My friend told the man he was reading a book on Psalm 23. The man asked if my friend would read out loud.
For about three days my friend would read each page to the man. When he came to the last page, my friend said, "There is a prayer on the last page to ask Jesus in your heart. Would you like to pray that prayer with me? " The man said he would.
At that moment my friend would read the prayer slowly and the man would repeat what my friend would say. Together -- they both prayed the sinner's prayer and received Jesus into their hearts. The man in the other bed died shortly thereafter to go from this life to eternal life in heaven with Jesus.
I guess of all the passages of the Bible that have comforted the hearts of troubled souls, strengthened the backs of weary travelers and encouraged the spirits of broken hearts, the twenty-third Psalm has done it the most.
"The Lord is my shepherd, " as the little girl said, "and that's all I want. "
The Psalmist goes on to say, and here is the text, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. " Why? "For Thou art with me. " Psalm 23:4
There are seven great valleys in the Bible: Siddim, Eschol, Kidron, Elah, Achor, Gehenna and Jezreel. I want you to look at each of these. I want you to notice that in each of these valleys God is with us. "Yea, though I walk through the valley... I will fear ...
