When you live in a home with multiple teenagers, you hear words and phrases that make absolutely no sense. For instance, the other day, my son responded to something I said... and his response was, "That's CAP." In my day, a cap was something you wore on your head. But today, 'that's cap' means-that's a lie or an exaggeration.
- That's "CRINGY" - embarrassing or awkward
- I like your "DRIP" - your style or clothes
This isn't the first generation to create their own language. In fact, Boomers were doing this way back in the 50's and 60's.
- "Stop dipping in my Kool Aid" - stop being nosy.
- I'm "Searching for the Skinny" - looking for information.
- "Don't flip your wig" - you need to calm down
- We are "wearing our thongs" to church - we are wearing flip flops
If a word or a phrase is going to communicate clearly... you've got to consider the context in which it was used. You've got to address, who said it? ... when did they say it? ...and what was the culture in which they were speaking?
The Bible has many words and phrases like this... to us, words mean one thing, but when they were written, they meant something different.
- "Prosper"-For most of us, this word means: to gain wealth or to acquire material possessions or health that we don't currently have.
- Biblical meaning: "May everything go well with you."
- "Repent" -For most of us, this word means: to feel remorse for something we did, and to feel 'sorry' for doing it.
- Biblical meaning: Repentance is never seen as an emotion or a feeling. Repentance is an action of turning away from your sin...
