Open your bibles to Hebrews 12. As we have seen, chapter 12 is all about comparing the Christian life to a demanding marathon. The Christian life isn't a stroll in the park or day at the beach. No, the Christian life is a grueling race - a marathon that takes everything you have. Ch12 shows how to press on.

1. We are to run with an eye to the heroes of the faith. They ran with endurance, and so ought we.

2. We are to run with an eye to ourselves. We must lay aside every weight and sin that slows us down.

3. We are to run with an eye to Jesus. He is the author and perfecter of faith. He is the one who endured the cross, despising the shame. He endured the hostility by sinners against Himself. He remained true under trial. He will be ready to help us in time of need.

Then in V12-13, we have more exhortation on how to run this race of the Christian life.

"Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed."

1. Lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees.

Drooping hands & weak knees happen when someone is tired and slowing down. When someone is running hard and fast; their arms are up pumping. They are lifting their knees high. But when someone is exhausted and can barely take another step, what do they look like? Their arms are drooping down. Their legs and knees are wobbly. You've seen when someone is running a marathon and they are exhausted and can hardly take another step. The word strengthen is literally a word that means to straighten up. So they regain strength; they straighten up, and they continue to run to finish the race.

2. Make straight paths for your feet
