Matthew 4:1-11
C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity - "Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting it, not by giving in. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later."
Only one person has lived, been tempted, and never sinned. - Jesus. He took temptation on head to head ... He took Satan on head to head and He alone prevailed perfectly.
- We said last week He is our REPRESENTATIVE & our EXAMPLE. - We needed Jesus to live and die in our place. - We also need to follow His example.
In Matthew 4:1-11 we see Jesus tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Jesus is victorious. He refuses to give in, He resists, He obeys God fully ... and He lived this way His whole life.
- His encounter reminds us that He is the REPRESENTATIVE we needed and His provides the EXAMPLE we need. - By faith in Him we too can live in obedience and victory.
JESUS WAS TEMPTED LIKE US AND HE IS OUR REPRESENTATIVE AND EXAMPLE.
Matt. 4:1-11 - Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
The Spirit had descended like a dove on Jesus at His baptism. The Father spoke out of Heaven and said ... THIS IS MY SON ... WITH WHOM I'M WELL PLEASED.
- We said last week that this was alluding to two OT passages about the Son and the Servant.
2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." 4 But he answered, "It is written, " 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, " 'He will command ...
