Solomon is remembered for a few things ... his wisdom ... his wealth ... his many wives and his fall into idolatry. - But also he's remembered for his building projects.
- His two major projects were his PALACE & the TEMPLE.
- From this point on the temple is going to become a major theme in Israel's history. It will become the center of religious life in Israel.

David had wanted to build a temple. God didn't allow David to do this. David had shed too much blood. Solomon's reign would be more peaceful so God determined that Solomon would build the temple, though the plan for the temple was given to David who passed it to Solomon.

The idea is to have a place that signifies God's very presence among His people ... a place for worship, for sacrifice. A place that shout who Israel believes God to be, and a place that shouts we are this God's people.

1 Kings 6:1-2 - In the four hundred and eightieth year after the people of Israel came out of
the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv,
which is the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD. 2 The house that King
Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.

The house of the Lord ... in the Hebrew that's Yahweh, the house of Yahweh.
- Just as God had said ... Solomon would now build the temple.

From Tabernacle to Temple - When Moses led the people out of Egypt and they wandered 40 years, God would meet with Moses a "tent of meeting" or TABERNACLE. It was there that the Ark of the Covenant was kept. In the Ark was the 10 commandments.

David had brought the Ark into Jerusalem and longed to build a temple.
