Who am I and Why Am I here? - It's a critical question. In our culture today ... it's a controversial question. Some would answer ... "You are whoever you want to be. You decide."
As Christian though we believe God has something to say about WHO YOU ARE. - We have a Creator and we are DESIGNED by Him. - We don't merely exist for ourselves.
- In fact, I'd argue that the Bible is one book that can adequately address the social confusion and cultural insanity of our day. - God's Word tells us who we are ... it tells us what is most important about it. God's Word teaches we are CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD.
Imago Dei is a CRITICAL doctrine for our day.
- It needs to inform how we see ourselves, our neighbors, how we minister to and serve individuals and families.
- We've been in this series on the Trinity ... so we know we are made in the image of the Triune God. - The fact that God is a Trinity informs things about us ... for we are made by Him and made in His image.
In the book of Genesis the Bible informs us multiple times that we are made in the image of God. - Genesis 5 gives us Adam's line, it shows us his descendants to Noah. - It opens with a reminder that we are made in the image of God, but also reminds us of the fall.
Gen. 5:1-5 - This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
