Exodus 20:1-17
Series Summary: This is a sermon series on the Ten Commandments and their relevance for today.
Sermon Summary: This sermon focuses on God's claim of EXCLUSIVE lordship. 1) WHAT does it mean to HAVE A GOD? 2) WHO are God's rivals? 3) WHY choose Yahweh?
Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me."
INTRODUCTION:
In 46 B.C., emperor Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar. Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches, and attending raucous parties. But not the Jews, nor, a few years later, the Christians. For them to offer sacrifices to the "god" Janus would violate the FIRST of the famous Ten Commandments.

The general principle that underlies it is the absolute and exclusive lordship of Yahweh, the trinitarian God of the Bible. Let's explore what that means and implies for us with three questions: What, Who, Why?

Mt.4:10 "You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him."
What does it mean, to "have a God?" How does one "have" a God? This does not simply mean "BELIEVING in God," i.e., acknowledging that there is a divine being somewhere. This is the case even if one grants that the existing divine being is the God of the Bible, wherein one says ...
