Exodus 20:7
Series Summary: This is a sermon series on the Ten Commandments and their relevance for today.
Sermon Summary: 1) What does it mean to say God is "Holy?" 2) Why is God's NAME holy? 3) What Counts as the "Name" of God? 4) What IS taking the Lord's name in "vain"?
Exodus 20:7 "You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name."
INTRODUCTION:
What's in a name? Jesus had four younger brothers: James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon (sounds like Mary and Joseph were going for all "J's" until they got to Simon). According to the Jewish historian Josephus, James met his end when the Jewish high priest sentenced him to be stoned to death. As was the custom for Jews at that time, James's bones would have been buried in a stone box called an ossuary. Some of the most compelling archaeological discoveries of recent years are ossuaries, burial boxes that were used by Jews in the first century. These burial boxes were for the bones of the deceased. When a corpse was wrapped in a spice-laden burial cloth and placed in a tomb, family would reopen the tomb a couple of years later and take the bones of the deceased and place them in an ossuary, making room for other burials. In 2002, an ossuary was found with the inscription "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus" dating unquestionably to the 1st century. Although contested, archaeologists have declared the inscription to be authentic, cursive Aramaic of three names common to first century Jewish males: James, Joseph, and Jesus. But hundreds of ossuaries that have been found have only the name of the deceased and that of his father. The phrase "brother of Jesus" additionally inscribed in the limestone indicates something of profound importance!
