LORD OF TIME (4 of 10)
Series: TEN
Steve Jones
Exodus 20:8
Series Summary: This is a sermon series on the Ten Commandments and their relevance for today.
Sermon Summary: This sermon focuses on God as the Lord of time. We honor God as the Lord of time by 1) Resting physically and, 2) Resting Spiritually.
Introduction:
A preacher was famous for his sermons lasting exactly 22 minutes. Then, one unfortunate Sunday, the sermon went on for 45 minutes. At dinner, his wife asked what had gone wrong. "It was just one of those things," the preacher replied moodily. "My trick is to slide a cough drop under my tongue just before I start the sermon. It always melts in exactly 22 minutes, and that way I know when it's time to stop. This morning I was 40 minutes in before I realized my cough drop was a shirt button."
I wonder if it's going to THAT kind of sermon today. We're often conscious of time. We spend time, manage time, and try to save time. But one thing we DON'T do, we don't CONTROL time. God is the Lord of time as is evidenced by the 4th commandment.
It is important that we remember the circumstances under which the Ten Commandments were originally given. The people of Israel have just been delivered by God from 400 years of slavery in Egypt. God has rescued them and is taking them to their own land to be His own special people. They have just crossed the Red Sea and have been led to Mount Sinai. Here God says to them, in effect, "We are now going to enter into an agreement or covenant. You will be My special people, but you must keep My commandments!"
The Ten commandments are then given as the prologue, the introduction, to that covenant, which we call the Law of Moses. God is saying, "If you are going to be My people, here's how you must live."
The first three of the Ten Commandments are all about WHO GOD IS. He is the ONLY true God. The last six of the Ten Commandments are all about WHO PEOPLE ARE as huma ...
