Introduction:

One mother tweeted the following: "One day I'll be thankful my daughter is an independent iron-willed human with an unrelenting strong voice, but not today, not in this grocery store."

The 5th commandment is about the GIFT of authority that God has given to parents to be the head of the children produced within marriage.

What is authority? Basically, as it relates to morality it is the power or right, 1) To declare to others what shall be considered right and wrong, 2) To demand of others that they do what is right, and 3) To enforce right conduct by punishing those who do wrong.

It is within the sphere of the family that children are supposed to learn what authority is all about. It is the parents' responsibility to teach their children to live and act under authority, and to respect that authority as it is exercised in the other spheres as well such as government, and church.

I. HONOR IS GOD'S PLAN FOR THE FAMILY

Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you."

The 5th commandment is all about family. It is God's way of letting us know that the family is the most basic and most important unit in human society. It embraces the two most basic relationships: husband to wife, and parents to children. The family is especially important because it plays a crucial role in establishing and maintaining proper authority in all spheres. It is primary and basic to all others because it is in the home that one begins to learn obedience and submission.
