MARRIAGE AND SEX (7 of 10)
Series: TEN
Steve Jones
Exodus 20:14
Series Summary: This is a sermon series on the Ten Commandments and their relevance for today.
Sermon Summary: 1) God defines the ESSENCE of marriage. 2) God describes the PURPOSE of marriage. 3) God prohibits sex APART from marriage. 4) God PROTECTS sex in marriage.
Introduction:

While mom tried to decide how to explain it, the child brightened and said, "Wait! I think I know! It means you can't cut down an adult tree!"

But it's us older folks who are still a bit nervous about discussing sex. But our purpose here is to explain the 7th commandment, and we cannot explain that without talking about the connection between marriage and sex.
In this 7th commandment, "You shall not commit adultery," God is establishing the absolute principle of the sanctity of the marriage relationship. In the original purity of the Garden of Eden, God ordained and blessed marriage, and everything related to it (Genesis 2:18-24; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 5:31). The expression "holy matrimony" is quite appropriate.
Since marriage is so good and so holy, it must be respected, honored, and protected. Anything that perverts, threatens, or destroys the marriage relationship is condemned and forbidden by God. Because the sexual relationship between husband and wife has such a key role ...
