Exodus 20:15 "You must not steal."

INTRODUCTION:

One day the guard who checked employees out of a large factory compound stopped a man who was leaving with a wheelbarrow piled high with used straw. Suspecting the man was stealing something hidden in the straw, the guard stopped him and searched through it. He found nothing and motioned the man on out the gate. The same thing happened the next day, and the next. After several more days of the same behavior, the guard couldn't stand it any longer. "Look," he said to the man. "I know you are stealing something, but I admit that I cannot find it or figure it out. If you will tell me what you have been stealing and will promise not to do it again, I give you my word that I will not report you." "OK, that's the deal" the man answered. "I have been stealing wheelbarrows."

The sin of stealing is defined as taking someone else's property - something that belongs to someone else - without that person's permission or without any right to do so. It means to deprive someone else of something that is rightfully his, against his will. It is a very common thing that happens all the time; There are dozens of synonyms and slang terms that refer to different kinds of stealing. It is one of the frequent crimes reported by our news sources.

The main presupposition of this commandment is the sanctity of private ownership of property, or the right to own property. "My property" includes things such as my name, my reputation, my time, and my "intellectual property" (as creative works are called). The 8th commandment makes ...
