TRUTH IS BASIC (9 of 10)
Series: TEN
Steve Jones
Exodus 20:16
Series Summary: This is a sermon series on the Ten Commandments and their relevance for today.
Sermon Summary: The 9th Commandment: "You shall not bear false witness." 1) Does Truth Exist? 2) Why is telling the truth important? 3) What counts as a lie? 4) What's so bad about lying?
Introduction: If you Google "Donald Trump is a liar" you will get 4,300,000 hits. "Joe Biden is a liar" yields 2,290,000. "Steve Jones is a liar" yields SIXTY-THREE-MILLION, TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND hits. I kid you not. But, in my defense, I think those mostly have to do with Steve Jones, lead guitarist for the "Sex Pistols" (which is not me). The fictional character George Costanza (from "Seinfeld") famously said, "I lie every second of the day. My whole life is a sham."
In her book on the 10 commandments (page 268), Dr. Laura schlessinger cites a New York Times report entitled, "What a tangled web we weave; When all practice to deceive." The report says 91% "confess that they regularly don't tell the truth." 20% say "they can't get through a day without conscious, premeditated white lies." The author suggests that we have moved far away from a society in which "a man's word is his bond" to one where "people are more accepting than ever before of exaggerations, falsifications, fabrications, misstatements, misrepresentations, gloss- overs, quibbles, concoctions, equivocations, shuffles, prevarications, trims, and truth colored and varnished."
Where do we WANT to be? Where does God want us to be? He tells us in the ninth commandment, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 5:20), and in Colossians 3:9 "Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices." The purpose of this sermon is to explore the meaning of these commandments.
I. DOES TRUTH EXIST?
The denial of absolute truth is the most pervasive and far-reaching feature ...
