Marriage Matters
Craig Smith
Matthew 19:1-6
I want to talk to you today about making marriage matter. Last week, we talked about the fact that marriage matters a lot to God, so it should matter a lot to us. But today, I want to talk about how to make marriage matter...how to move your marriage from wherever it is - and maybe you'd say it's good, but it could always be better...or maybe you'd say it's not good right now, and any improvement would be good news - I want to talk about how to move your marriage from wherever it is, further down the road towards what God wants it to be.

If you're a follower of Jesus, you have an Enemy dedicated to causing division in your marriage.[CS1] And I'm talking about your spiritual Enemy. The Bible says that in addition to the physical world God created, there is also a spiritual realm...and just like Adam and Eve sinned in the physical realm and rebelled against God...an angel we call Satan sinned in the spiritual realm and took a bunch of angels with him that became what we call demons. Now, I'm not trying to alarm you, I'm just trying to inform. The Bible says:
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (1Pe 5:8-9)
And I think it's interesting that it talks about the family of believers because here's what I've found: One of our Enemy's favorite tactics is to try to destroy our families. And causing division in our marriages is one of his favorite ways to do that.
I started to figure that out years ago when I began to realize that Coletta's and my biggest fights always seemed to happen ri ...
