Any of you who have traveled out west in the Rocky Mountains have seen the signs that tell you that you are crossing the continental divide. The continental divide is that point that separates the watersheds of the east from the west. Theoretically at least, if you could place a knife edge on precisely the right spot and then allow a droplet of water to fall on that knife edge, that water droplet would spit in half, half would fall to the east and half to the rest. One half of the droplet would flow west into the Yellowstone, the Snake, then the Columbia River, and finally out into the Pacific Ocean. That other half could flow toward the Platt, the Missouri, the Mighty Mississippi, and ultimately out into the Gulf of Mexico, and then into the Atlantic.
