Proverbs 3:1-12
Today we continue are walk among the giants. We are looking at the fourth of five giant passages of scriptures. Like walking among the giant redwoods of California, when you come to these scriptures, you know you have come to something special. Your natural reaction is stop in your tracks and quietly whisper "WOW!" Today's WOW passage, like the others we have examined, are commonly on folk's list of favorite Bible verses. You see it on plaques and bumper stickers. You may have memorized it at one time.
It is a giant passage because it speaks to the big issues of life. As with the others we have looked at, I want you to remember this passage, see it with fresh eyes, and make it a treasured part of your faith. Today we go back to the Old Testament. Our giant text is Proverbs 3:5-6. Let's read it in its context-Proverbs 3:1-12.
The focus of our walk among the giants today is verses 5-6. But as with all these great texts, the context provides the key to everything. On the surface, this is a passage for young people. Did you catch how the passage started? "My son, do no forget my teachings . . . " Here's a father giving his son giving some last minute advice. Maybe the son was leaving home for the first time, perhaps joining the army, going off for schooling, moving away for a new job. Whatever it was, the dad thought it important to offer his son some direction for the future.
Of course, advice can flow the other direction as well. I came across just such wisdom offered by some youngsters that were asked what they had learned in life thus far. Patrick, age 10, said, "Never trust a dog to watch your food." I can appreciate that. Michael, wise man that he was said, "Never tell your mom her diet's not working." Naomi, not yet a teenager, had already figured out one key to negotiating, "If you want a kitten, start out by asking for a horse." Joel, 10 years old, ...
